Student Insurance

Health Insurance for International Students

All international students must have health insurance throughout their enrollment at ฬวะฤAPP.

Any international students staying in Korea are subject to the mandatory subscription to the National Health Insurance of Korea from March 1st, 2021.

There are four types of health insurance policies that international students may hold: insurance policies bought in their respective home countries that provide coverage for medical costs in Korea, local health insurance, insurance policies provided by Korean insurance companies for international students, and National Health Insurance. The University recommends that international students purchase policies of the last three kinds.
(Insurance policies purchased by students in their home countries often fail to cover the costs of treatments for those who contract illnesses or are injured in Korea.)

Applying for National Health Insurance

Enrollment Time

Visa Type Enrollment Time
Overseas study(D-2) First Entry: Alien registration date
Reentry: Reentry date

Contributions

KRW 39,540/month (as of March 2021)

Reduction in Contributions: From March 2021 ~ February 2022, the students pay 30% of the insurance to lessen the students' financial burden.

- Reduction only applies to the household income of KRW 3.6 million or below, and the property tax base of KRW 135 million or below.

Contribution Payment

The contribution for the next month is due by the 25th of the current month(prepayment).

- (Payment Method) Automatic transfer, website, NHIS branch office, bank

Insurance Benefits

The same benefits as the Korean citizens.

(Immediate Coverage) The insured is not required to claim benefits after receiving treatment.

- It is inapplicable to non-covered items, such as treatment for diseases that do not affect work or daily life ex) plastic surgery

Co-payment Rate

A person who receives medical care benefits bears part of the medical expenses as below.

- Outpatient Medical Services: 30%~60% of the NHI, covering expenses (varies by medical care institution type and area)

- Hospitalization Expenses: 20%

Disadvantages with Nonpayment of Contributions

(Restrictions on Health Insurance Benefits) Health Insurance benefits at medical care institutions are unavailable from the first day of the month following the payment deadline until the contribution is fully paid.

(Restrictions on Visa Extension) Your stay in Korea may not be extended by the Korea Immigration Service.

- If the contribution in arrears is more than KRW 500,000 or if other collections in arrears are more than KRW 100,000.

Enrollment Procedure

No action is required from students, as they are automatically subscribed to health insurance by the NHIS.

NHI Card and Subscription Guide are sent to your residential address in Korea.

โ€ป Report changes, such as the place of residence, passport number, or visa.

Exemption

If a student receives medical coverage equivalent to medical care benefits (Article 41 of the National Health Insurance Act) by foreign laws, from foreign insurance, or under contract with an employer, a student may apply for exemption from the subscription.

- Students can apply for an exemption but it can be rejected by the National Health Insurance Service.
